What is a Self-Checkout?

Also known as self-service checkouts, these are used in shops and supermarkets. Designed to offer customers a faster, more autonomous shopping experience, they allow consumers to scan, weigh and pay for items without the intervention of a traditional cashier.

How do Self-Checkouts work?

Self-Checkouts are relatively straightforward. Customers first select the items they wish to buy and place them in a basket or on the dedicated self-checkout counter. They then use a built-in scanner to read the product barcodes or enter the item codes using the touch-sensitive screen.

Once all the items have been scanned, customers can check their shopping list and adjust quantities if necessary. They then proceed to checkout using a variety of payment methods, such as credit cards, debit cards or mobile payments, and sometimes even cash.

Self-Scanning: An Evolution of Self-Checkout

Self-Scanning is a variation on Self-Checkout where customers can scan the products they wish to buy themselves, before going to the checkout.

There are two types of self-scanning:

  • Scanning with a dedicated device: customers are given a hand-held scanner as they enter the shop. They then scan the barcode of each product as they place it in their basket. Their total purchases are displayed on the scanner in real-time. Once they’ve finished shopping, they go to a self-payment terminal, where they find a list of all the products they’ve already scanned and pay for them.
  • Smartphone scanning: customers use the store’s mobile application to scan products. The application displays the total purchases in real-time and allows them to pay directly online.

The Advantages of Self-Checkout

  1. Time savings: customers can avoid queuing at traditional checkouts, making the purchasing process faster and more efficient.
  2. Increased autonomy: consumers have total control over the purchasing process, which can improve their overall shopping experience.
  3. Payment flexibility: Self-checkout offers a variety of payment options, allowing customers to choose the method that suits them best.

Self-Checkout: revolutionising retail and optimising the customer experience

Self-checkout represents a major advancement in retail, offering customers a faster, more autonomous shopping experience. This system, whether the classic version or Self-scanning with a dedicated device or smartphone, allows items to be scanned and paid for efficiently without the intervention of a cashier.

Key benefits include time savings, increased autonomy and flexible payment options, enhancing the customer experience. All in all, the adoption of self-checkout is proving to be a beneficial strategy for retailers looking to improve operational efficiency and satisfy their customers.
